Opportunity knocks in post-Wenger era

Image
Arsene Wenger's decision to step down as Arsenal manager after 22 years in charge marks the end of an era, but also a huge opportunity for the Gunners to reestablish themselves among the elite of English and European football. Tributes poured in from players past and present on Friday, as well as Wenger's adversaries over the past two decades, such as Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, for his longevity and the revolution in English football he helped inspire. However, there is no hiding the fact the Frenchman has bowed out now due to increasing calls for him to go from frustrated fans as Arsenal slipped further behind their Premier League rivals in recent seasons. Arsenal haven't won the league since Wenger's crowing achievement in leading "The Invincibles" to an unbeaten league season in 2003/04. Last season was the first time in 20 years the club didn't qualify for the Champions League, but they haven't got beyond the last 16 in that compet

Lyon a step closer to UCL return

Image
Captain Nabil Fekir scored a superb goal as Lyon stayed on course for a return to the Champions League by romping to a 5-2 win at Dijon in Ligue 1 on Friday. Memphis Depay, Houssem Aouar, Bertrand Traore and Maxwel Cornet were also on target for the visitors in Burgundy, as a rampant Lyon claimed a sixth consecutive league victory. Bruno Genesio's side – who missed out on a Champions League place this season – are now just a point behind second-placed Monaco, who visit Guingamp on Saturday. Crucially, they are also three points ahead of fourth-placed Marseille, who entertain Lille in another Saturday game. Only the top three sides qualify for the Champions League in Ligue 1, and OL looked to be out of the running after a poor run of form in February and into March. However, they have come roaring back on a winning run that has included a dramatic away victory at Marseille and has seen them score 19 goals while taking 18 points from a possible 18. This was the fifth

Guardiola targets points record

Image
Pep Guardiola has indicated pursuing a Premier League record points total may be the best way to keep his Manchester City players focused over the final five matches of the season. City are at home to Swansea on Sunday, having secured Guardiola's first English league title last weekend, as they won at Tottenham Hotspur and closest challengers Manchester United suffered a shock defeat at home to bottom-of-the-table West Bromwich Albion. The manager, though, is concerned his squad's performance levels will drop, now that they effectively have only pride left to play for this term. That is why he feels that chasing Chelsea's Premier League record of 95 points in a season, set in 2004/05, is a useful target for City, who are currently on 87. "In the past, I have won the league at Barcelona and Bayern Munich with five, six, seven games to go, and the remaining games were not good," Guardiola said Friday. "We tried to tell the players, 'Come on, ke

Barely 4 months after handing a drowning New Stars of Douala a second life in the top flight and landing New Stars the cup of Cameroon, coach Djam George Laurent who joined Stade Renard in January has left the club on mutual consent after a streak of bad results. Arsenal, Atletico into semis; Lazio out

Image
Arsenal survived a scare as they progressed to the last four of the Europa League on Thursday after coming back to draw 2-2 with CSKA Moscow in Russia in their quarterfinal second leg. Fedor Chalov and Kirill Nababkin scored for CSKA to set Arsenal nerves jangling in the Russian capital, but Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey both netted late on for the Premier League side as they won the quarterfinal 6-3 on aggregate. It was another night of comebacks in a crazy midweek in Europe, with Marseille and Red Bull Salzburg producing stirring performances to overturn first-leg deficits. Atletico Madrid are also through, and remain the favourites, despite losing 1-0 on the night away to Sporting Lisbon. Arsene Wenger was without Granit Xhaka and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Moscow so Mohamed Elneny and Welbeck came in as the two changes to the team that won the first leg 4-1. Clinging to the Europa League to rescue their season as they languish well out of the running for a top-four finish

PSG ready to take title back from Monaco

Image
Paris Saint-Germain will reclaim the French title if they beat reigning champions and current second-placed side Monaco at the Parc des Princes in Ligue 1 on Sunday. The Qatar-backed Parisians lead Monaco by 14 points with six games to go, meaning they are on the brink of a fifth title in six seasons, despite having to cope without the injured Neymar for more than a month now. The Brazilian has been in his home country recovering from a foot operation and PSG are hoping to have him back before the end of the season. But they should be champions well before any possible return date for the world's most expensive player, and beating Monaco would be the perfect way to seal the deal. It would come a year after the principality side finished eight points clear of PSG at the summit in a campaign which also saw them reach the Champions League semifinals. "Knowing that we can be champions at home, against our main rivals this season and the team that kidnapped the title f

Barcelona bid to break record

Image
Barcelona will break a 38-year record by avoiding defeat against Valencia on Saturday but the priority is rejuvenation following their Champions League nightmare in Rome. If the Catalans extend their unbeaten run in La Liga to 39 games at the Camp Nou, they will pass the mark set by Real Sociedad in 1980 and take one step closer to a first invincible season. But while they have been faultless in the league, any celebrations are likely to be tainted by Tuesday's collapse as Barca threw away a 4-1 first leg advantage over Roma and crashed out of the Champions League quarterfinals. The defeat has been castigated by the Spanish press and Ernesto Valverde's side, still on track for a domestic double, are suddenly finding themselves with questions to answer. Only Lionel Messi could score a hat-trick one match, then have his form criticised the next, but the Argentinian was out of sorts in Italy and has lacked some of his usual spark in recent weeks. Blame, however, has b
