De Bruyne carried off, Jesus also suffers injury

Image
Kevin De Bruyne was carried off on a stretcher late in Manchester City's 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, with Gabriel Jesus also leaving the pitch injured and in tears. Belgium international De Bruyne, who has been instrumental to City's success this season, suffered the injury after a collision with Palace's Jason Puncheon in stoppage time at Selhurst Park and left the pitch on a stretcher, with his right leg in a brace. TEARFUL JESUS Earlier in the match, Jesus landed awkwardly, and had to be withdrawn. He made his way to the dressing room in tears, consoled by City's medical staff. The extent of the injuries has yet to be determined but with the Premier League leaders having a clash with Watford in two days' time, manager Pep Guardiola will certainly be hoping for good news after both players undergo tests.

Atletico pin their hopes on Costa

Image
Diego Costa is eager to begin his second spell at Atletico Madrid after spending the last three months confined to the club's training ground, shackled by the club's ban on registering new players, the striker said on Sunday. "I've waited a long time for this day, I've been working hard and training hard but there's nothing else to do, I need to play, I'm tired of training," Costa told a news conference. Costa, who fired Atletico to a first league title in 18 years in 2014, agreed a return to the club from Chelsea in September for £57 million, nearly double the price he left for more than three years ago. He was officially presented alongside fellow Spain teammate Vitolo – who signed from Sevilla in July for 40 million euros – before an open training session at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which local media said 20 000 supporters attended. "I'm in much better shape than when I arrived, I've prepared well and worked hard and

‘Young charged with violent conduct’

Image
Manchester United's Ashley Young was charged with violent conduct by the English Football Association (FA) on Sunday after his altercation with Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic in the Premier League the previous day. Young appeared to strike Tadic with an elbow during Saturday's 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. "Young's charge follows an incident during Saturday's game against Southampton which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video," the FA said in a statement. Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said after the match: "I haven't seen the replay but it is difficult for the referee to see in one second what happened in all different places – but I have to respect the decision." Swansea defender Kyle Naughton has also been charged with violent conduct by the FA for allegedly stamping on Watford's Stefano Okaka during the Welsh side's 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Pogba urges United to 'wake up'

Image
Paul Pogba has called on Manchester United to "wake up" after a third straight draw over the Christmas period saw them slip behind Chelsea in the Premier League table. Draws against Leicester and Burnley either side of Christmas severely undermined United's status as challengers to Manchester City and Saturday's 0-0 stalemate at home to Southampton means they are now third in the standings, 14 points adrift of City. The problems are mounting for manager Jose Mourinho, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's knee problem keeping him out for a month and Romelu Lukaku taken off on a stretcher after a nasty clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt. United may also be expecting contact from the Football Association after footage emerged of Ashley Young apparently elbowing Dusan Tadic in the stomach. Everton await on New Year's Day and Pogba has demanded better from his side, despite the short turnaround. "We didn't lose but we have to wake up, bounce back and get

Ederson preserves City's unbeaten record

Image
Ederson's stopped Luka Milivojevic's late penalty to save Manchester City from defeat on Sunday but a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace brought the Premier League leaders' record-breaking 18 match winning run to an end. Milivojevic was presented with the chance to seal a memorable victory for Roy Hodgson's relegation-threatened side when Wilfried Zaha was brought down by Raheem Sterling in the 90th minute. But the Palace winger struck his spot-kick too close to Ederson, allowing the City keeper to preserve his side’s 21-game unbeaten start to the league campaign. However, City’s failure to score in a league game for the first time since last April meant they fell short in their bid to equal Bayern Munich 19-game winning run of four years ago, the longest in Europe’s five major leagues. And City’s afternoon was further soured when Kevin De Bruyne was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious looking injury immediately after the spot-kick following an ugly ch

Jose Mourinho faces injury crisis in United attack

Image
Jose Mourinho takes Manchester United to Everton on New Year's Day in the midst of a major striker crisis as he faces former Old Trafford favourite and club record goalscorer Wayne Rooney. Romelu Lukaku suffered a worrying head injury early in Saturday's disappointing 0-0 draw with Southampton, United's third successive stalemate and a result which saw them drop below Chelsea and into third place in the Premier League. But, of arguably greater concern, Mourinho also revealed that veteran forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suffered a knee injury which will sideline him for at least a month – the problem compounded by reports that he has suffered damage to the same knee in which he tore ligaments at the end of last season. Lukaku, meanwhile, has been ruled out for at least two games – the visit to Goodison Park and Friday's FA Cup third-round meeting with Championship side Derby County at Old Trafford. "It is the same, a massive problem. He is a 37-year-old wi

No stopping Salah - Klopp

Image
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes winger Mohamed Salah can maintain his incredible goalscoring form for the rest of the season. The Egypt international has netted 23 times for Liverpool in all competitions, equalling a club record set by Roger Hunt in 1961/62 for most goals in a campaign before the turn of the year. Salah will hope to continue his hot streak against Burnley at Turf Moor on New Year's Day, although Klopp revealed he will first be checked by Liverpool's medical staff to assess a minor injury. The 25-year-old was substituted seven minutes from time in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday having scored twice to help the Reds fight back from a goal down and secure the points. "He was limping, and that is not a good sign," Klopp said. "I don't know what is wrong. We will have to see what the problem was for the next game. "But Mo can keep that standard for sure. It's not just about scoring only, it&#

Guardiola fears New Year hangover

Image
Pep Guardiola has expressed concern that Manchester City could stumble significantly in the New Year as they chase success in four competitions. The City manager is worried that he does not have the experience to cope with the kind of schedule his side are likely to face over the next couple of months. Guardiola's side have been in extraordinary form over the first half of the season, dropping just two points in 20 Premier League matches. They also finished top of their Champions League group, securing a last-16 tie against Swiss champions Basle in February. But City have faced nine matches during a busy December, and are set to play a minimum of seven during January, with four fixtures in the Premier League, a two-legged League Cup semifinal against Championship side Bristol City and an FA Cup third round home tie against Burnley. Victory over Burnley would ensure another cup game at the end of January, and Guardiola is concerned that the schedule will eventually catch

Hamsik ensures Napoli end year on top of the Italian Serie A

Image
Napoli's record goal-scorer Marek Hamsik scored again to keep his side top of Serie A with a 1-0 win at Crotone on Friday as they sealed the symbolic title of Winter Champions. It was the 1l7th goal in a Napoli shirt for the Slovakian international who last week overtook Diego Maradona as the club's all-time leading scorer. Maurizio Sarri's side end 2017 with just one defeat in 19 games, against champions Juventus, who are four points behind ahead of their trip on Saturday to struggling Verona. "It was important to bring home the three points," said Hamsik. "But this title (Winter Champions) means nothing. We were already on the right track three years ago, but we realise it means nothing, as we want to be top at the end of the season." "Statistics mean nothing," continued Sarri, whose side are the only team in Europe's top five leagues who are unbeaten away. "It's a strong run, reaching the Champions League is very i

'City's spending power too much for United'

Image
Jose Mourinho says he is happy with the financial backing of the Manchester United board but fears it will be difficult for his club to challenge rivals Manchester City given their massive spending power. The United manager was expanding on comments he made following the 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday, a result which allowed Premier League leaders City to open a record 15-point lead at the top of the table 24 hours later. Mourinho had claimed on Tuesday the near-£300 million he has spent in 18 months at Old Trafford is not enough to compete with their neighbours, who have spent over £75 million more than United in that time. Mourinho offered more detail on the subject, pointing to Guardiola's approach to strengthening his goalkeeper and full-back positions as examples of how City can dominate their rivals. "It's very difficult. Do you think the club can put here now £600m and let's buy six players of £100m, the club can't do that," he said.

Conte keen not to lose Hazard, Courtois

Image
Antonio Conte wants both Belgian star duo playmaker Eden Hazard and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to remain with champions Chelsea despite speculation they would like to move to Spain. Hazard's father told a Belgian newspaper his son doesn't wish to commit to a new contract – he still has over two years left on his present one – because of apparent interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid. Courtois, who had a highly successful spell with Atletico Madrid, has said he would like to return to Spain one day especially as his children are being brought up in Madrid. However, Conte, speaking on the eve of his side's match with Stoke City, stonewalled on both counts saying in the case of 26-year-old Hazard whatever was said would not be revealed in public. "This is a private conversation – between the club and the player, and the agent of the player," said Conte. "I'm proud to have him in my team, in my squad, and I'm very happy to work with him.

'Room for more' as Ronaldo wins Globe award

Image
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was Thursday named Globe Soccer's Best Player for the second year in a row and the fourth time overall although he wasn't present in person to receive his trophy. The Portuguese international also won the prize, organised by the EFAA (European Association of Football Agents) and ECA (European Clubs Association) in 2011, 2014 and 2016. Ronaldo appeared by video link as he received the award from Italy's Alessandro del Piero. Despite his numerous awards, Ronaldo joked that he still has plenty of room to expand his personal trophy cabinet. "Don't worry my friend, I have a lot of space," Ronaldo, who inspired Real to the Champions League last season, told the show's host. "For me it's a special moment and I feel very happy to receive this award. I have to say thank you to my teammates, to my coach, to Real Madrid. "It was an amazing year, we won a lot of trophies collective and myself individual,
